Club Sports
Club Sports are student-led, student-run organizations that compete against other colleges and universities across the country. Many of our Club teams are highly competitive and strive to be national champions.
Participating in Club Sports has had a super positive impact on my Michigan experience... It created another small community and group of people that I could trust and rely on. And it was fun! - Lindsey Reich, Women's Soccer
Deciding to join the sailing team has been one of the best decisions I've made during my time as an undergraduate. - Alexis Stokel, Sailing
Club sports is a small community that I have been lucky to find at this university. I am proud to say that this group has provided me with wonderful friends and connections I will hold dear down the road. It has helped not only my physical health, but also my mental health. - Madison McClune, Softball
This club is where I found my best friends and heroes who push me and remind me to improve myself every single day. - Raymond Lu, Men's Ultimate
Each Club Sport either sets its own membership guidelines or follows membership rules set by their league or governing body. In all cases, a club’s membership must include a minimum of 90% U‑M students and (if a club allows for non-student participation) a maximum of 10% non-students (U‑M faculty and staff). Fees are determined by each team.
The student officers (a minimum of three per club) work in cooperation with Recreational Sports and are responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of their club. Officers have the unique opportunity to learn about athletic team leadership, fundraising, logistics, equipment management and financial operations.
All Club Sports teams appoint their own coaches—some are paid, some are volunteers. Teams must have at least one non-student coach; students may serve as assistant coaches. Coaches register with the Club Sports Office at the Intramural Sports Building.
Club Sports Council
The mission of the Club Sports Council is to provide avenues for Clubs to learn from each other, to act as a liaison between the Clubs and the Club Sports Program staff, and to promote the Club Sports program throughout the University.
The Club Sports Council is made up of one representative from each of the 30 Club Sports teams; the representative must be a member of that Club in good standing and who has knowledge of the administrative and operational work done by the Club.
In addition, there are five (5) Executive Board members who are elected to a one year term (May-April) by a system of one vote per Club Sport, who must have served as a member of the Club Sports council before standing for office.
Each Club selects their Club Sports Council representative independently; E-Board interest is solicited during the Winter semester each year and additional eligibility/requirements must be met before standing for office.
When you join a Club Sports team, you’re joining a group of national champions. In fact, the University of Michigan has been frequently represented in Club Sport national tournaments:
