How to Save a Life

A photo of six people at a CPR training event, including Ethan King whose life was saved by bystanders and first responders who used CPR on him.

Sports pose a risk of injury for all who participate in them, even our elite athletes who represent some of the best in the country. No one would have guessed that a seasoned runner, a seemingly healthy first year student, who was at the beginning of a typical training run with the Running Club would collapse while on a run, but that is exactly what happened early this Fall semester.

We are so grateful for the willingness of bystanders who stopped and helped Ethan King, who collapsed while out on a run. The support of them, the first responders on duty, and the team at Michigan Medicine took what could have been a tragedy and instead created a happy ending.

We are grateful for the quick action of the bystanders and are especially proud of the focus the Running Club has brought to the importance of CPR through advocacy and events that teach techniques that can be critical to saving lives.
